ATLANTIC SALMON FLY SYMPOSIUM
Gary Grant
The International Atlantic Salmon Fly Symposium may prove better than first expected. There has been an impressive amount of interest in the event from all over the United States, Canada, and Europe. Plans have been modified somewhat from first expected-the content will be increased to about 20 mini-workshops. There should be something for everyone from fishing flies, to crafting your own hooks. Some of the folks that will be demonstrating their superb skills or answering some of the tough questions that seem to part of dressing salmon flies includes:
Charlie Chute demonstrating his superb skills at the vise in mounting married wings.
Michel Fontan will show how to design his hybrids which are patterns mixing full dress and spey techniques.
Vern Jeremica will demonstrate how to dress low-water patterns.
Tom Juracek will be demonstrating his skills at the vise with full-feather wings.
Mark Kirchner will be demonstrating his skills at the vise or a slide show about fly proportions and material selection.
Judy Lemberg will share with us her experiences on how to teach the art of dressing salmon flies.
Wayne Luallen will share his expertise in materials care and selection.
Mike Martinek will share with us his skills in dressing the classic patterns from the Northeast.
Marvin Nolte will be sharing his superb skills at the vise.
Glen Pickel will demonstrate his exceptional skills at the vise with hairwing conversions.
John Olshewsky will share his expertise on tips, tags and tails, along with hooks and gut eyes.
Michael Radencich will share with us his skills on floss, tinsel, and jointed bodies.
John Shewey has offered to conduct two workshops; the first dealing with duck flank, and the second on the legality of various materials.
Henrik Strandgaard will share his expertise with the fine art of hook making.
Ken Slyvia will show us how to mount and frame these works of art.
Glenn Wilson will share his expertise at the vise by demonstrating the techniques used to mount Dee and Spey wings.
The workshops are in an open forum. That is, the workshop presenter will be demonstrating certain aspects of dressing flies and the show audience will be able to observe, take notes or ask questions. You will not have to sign up ahead of time for any workshop. Basically, you will be free to move around and observe whatever interests you-and stay there for as long as you wish. A symposium program will be available. The program will include additional information about the workshops, tips and techniques for dressing salmon flies and information about the folks contributing to the symposium. The program will be a great souvenir from the event.
