CUTICLE CUTTERS FOR MATERIAL TRIMMING

In tying Atlantic Salmon flies, and other types of complicated patterns, it is necessary to trim material waste ends as precisely as possible. For years I used sharp, fine pointed, scissors. The same scissors that trimmed hackle fibers could not be used for hackle stems, or heavy tinsel for fear of damaging the blades. Even then, if the blades were slightly dull the material may not be cut cleanly. There had to be a better way to closely trim material on the hook. One evening I watched my wife trim the cuticles on her nails with a pair of trimmers that resembled very fine, diagonal jawed, wire cutters. Unlike wire cutters, the jaws meet almost parallel, closing at the tip first. Unlike scissors, even the heaviest tying material could be trimmed flush with the hook using the cutters. I started using a pair of these cutters two years ago, in place of heavy scissors. Though they cost the same as a pair of good scissors, they have never needed sharpening and never failed to cut cleanly. There are several brands on the market, the ones that I use are made by REVLON.
