HELP FOR YOUR SCISSORS
John Colburn
Sharp scissors are just as important in dressing salmon flies as stress-free dyed white turkey tail. But, it seems they do not stay sharp very long. And as expensive as a good pair of scissors are these days, it is a waste to get rid of them before their time. To save a few bucks so we can use it on materials, here is solution for all those dull scissors. I have come across a source for their reconditioning: K. A. Vogel Sons, Inc. 2215 N. Milwaukee Avenue Chicago, IL 60647 Phone (773) 2355336.
I know of several people that have sent scissors there and have nothing but praise for the quality of the reconditioning. According to the folks that have used their service the scissors were returned after a week in their shop in better condition than when purchased. The cost of the basic grind is $6.00 per pair. If you wish them reserrated, add $0.40 per pair. Shipping and handling is $5.00 per order.
The craftsman at K.A. Vogel Sons perform the following tasks: disassembly; hand-polish the inside; grind the edge at the proper angle; true the points; re-serrate one edge; reseat and re-assemble the scissors. Basically, they totally re-manufacture them. If you decide to have K.A. Vogel Sons sharpen your scissors, wrap them to prevent rattling during shipment. They ask that you include a packing list with your name and address and a check to cover sharpening and shipping.
