CHALLENGE
Absolutely amazing! Thanks to everyone who submitted a fly for October's Challenge. Such variety and creativity among these flies. Thanks to Nick Fionovich for providing the pattern and Mark Kirchner for all his photography, layout and color copy work. The background for this issue's challenge is Suminagashi, a Japanese form of paper marbling, hand-done by Mark. Very succulent!
Mark also submitted the next Challenge. And what a challenge this is going to be!
Perhaps one of the least understood and most neglected style of Salmon Fly is the Grub style. When was the last time you found a photo of a Glow Worm or a jungle Hornet gracing the pages of a glossy magazine or taking up ink in a book about how pretty flies are?
Grubs are a viable, practical style of fly that is long overdue. If you have any doubt as to its practicality, think twice when you tie your next. Wooley Bugger on. It's just a modernized Grub.
Mark is challenging you to take a standard classic built, married or whole feather wing pattern and convert it into a grub style fly. Like a cross between a Blue Doctor and a Tippet Grub or a Tricolor and a Silver Partridge. It can be a modification of any fly so long as it is not a grub to start. This could be very interesting to see a Black Prince or Beauly Snow Fly done as a Grub. How about Traherne's Golden Butterfly? Ooooooh, exciting!
Speaking of which, do you know anything about Grubs? How about questions on how to dress Grubs. What kind of hook is best suited to tying Grubs? Do Grubs have any effectiveness when they're fished today? If not on Atlantic Salmon, how about. Steelhead. Someone's got to know something. Hope this generated or jostled an idea for an article from someone (hopefully, someone who hasn't submitted before!).
Anyway, submit your Grubby Flies directly to Mark Kirchner. Please have them in no later than June 1, 1995 for inclusion in the July issue.
Enjoy taking your tying to a new low! Let's get Grubby!
