In memoriam - Ron Tanouye
Trying to make sense of the death of a friend is never easy but in this particular case it is even tougher. Ron Tanouye, a true lover of anything to do with fly fishing lost his life on the Dean River in British Columbia in mid September. He apparently was trying to cross a tributary of the Dean when he lost his footing and drowned.
Ron was one of the finest persons in the fly tying community I've known. He was a tireless booster of fly tiers and collectors and would darn near give you the shirt off his back if you asked for it. His enthusiasm for fly tying was infectious and his love of fishing was legend.
To say that Ron will be missed by this editor would be a supreme understatement and I know this goes for anyone who knew him and worked with him.
He is survived by his wife Cathy to whom all our thoughts and prayers go.
Who of us that bought our copies of Joe Bates' The Art of the Atlantic Salmon Fly and Judith Dunham's The Classic Atlantic Salmon Fly wasn't inspired by the masterful technique and artistry of Al Cohen's flies as featured in both these books? Al certainly made an intense impression on me and inspired me to work at my own less than inspirational technique.
Even though I was barely acquainted with Al, I was impressed with his easy manner, sense of humor and dedication to fly tying. Al succumbed recently to cancer and with his passing the fly tying community has lost one of its best.
He, too will be sorely missed.
