Well, what a difference a year and a half makes. When I passed along the editorship of the Flyer back in October of 1994, little did I realize at the time I would be doing it again but, here I am!
I decided to renew my committment to the Flyer simply because I, as well as everyone else I've talked to in recent months, did not want to see it slowly fade away. All of us who have a passion for tying the classic salmon flies have looked forward to this small connection between us that spans one continent and reaches eastward toward another. So, I pronounce the Flyer alive and well and certainly not down for the count.
As I mentioned in my letter to you all recently, you will notice some changes to this newsletter but I will repeat them here for those who either didn't get my letter or who are new subscribers. They are:
1. The Flyer will be limited to a total of 16 pages. That translates to four 11x17 pages printed both sides and folded (plus the cover). This will keep our mailing costs down as well as our overall production prices.
2. There will be absolutely no display advertising. I've heard from a lot of people who do not want the Flyer to become a commercial venture and I heartily agree with them. There will be a "Flea Market" section in the back of each Flyer for those who want to post want ads and this will be a free (yes, I said free!) service to all paid subscribers. But please limit your ad to no more than three or four lines for the sake of space.
3. I did not mention this in the letter but the new (or old, since it is the same as when I had the Flyer before) subscription rate will be $15.00 per year.
4. All dues and new subscriptions should be sent to our new treasurer Marvin Nolte (see his address on the front page). Please do not send any money to me! (not that I would abscond with it, you understand.)
5. Mark Kirchner is going to help me with the color xerox covers as he has found a good, low-priced supplier in his area. This will be the only color photo in the Flyer. It's just too expensive to do any more so there won't be any color on the inside.
Please send all your articles (and I need some now for the next issue!) to me, as usual but please, please send them typewritten and double-spaced (this is standard with any magazine submission). If you don't have a typewriter or word processor, that's okay but please print your article instead of using longhand (I hate to say it but I have had trouble in the past reading the writing of some submissions). For those of you with computer word processing programs it would be a big help to send your article on disk as a text file (*.txt). I use an IBM clone so format your disks accordingly (but include a printout of your article anyway just to be safe!). You can also E-mail me your article as a text file to. This would save you postage.
The next item I need to tell you about is an unfortunate one. As of this writing we still have not received a check from the previous editor to close out the account under his name and give Marvin and I the funds we need for an entire year. We have received a lot of donations from some very generous members, though, to get us going to at least do two issues. So, unfortunately, I have to ask for your subscription fee for this year. Yes, I know most of you have not gotten the issues that you paid for in the past and it is very hard indeed for me to ask you to shell out more money but such is the reality of the situation. Again, please send all subscription money to Marvin Nolte!
And, as you have heard so many times in the past - this Flyer depends on you. Without articles from you there can be no Flyer. Let's keep this thing going so write about anything relating to salmon fly tying.
Finally, I really appreciate the many calls I've gotten from past subscribers who heard I was taking over again. Your support certainly makes it easier. I also want to thank Marvin and Mark for their willingness to help (as well as everyone else who offered their services). Let's keep Flying!
